Shaun Slifer is working out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a craft so ancient, we have no way of knowing how far back it goes. Although the art of Scrimshaw refers to what was once the art of sailors working with whale bones and/or ivory, the art of carving on bone goes back much further than that. A dear friend once made a pair of feather shaped earrings for me out of carved bone and then used the art of Scrimshaw to work an inked feather design into their surface.
